Poonkudil Mana (Vallikkappatta)
Poongudil Mana is an Ayurvedic treatment centre for people experiencing mental health-related difficulties, offering traditional methods of mental healthcare. The Mana is located at Vallikappatta in Malappuram District, approximately 6.5 kilometres from Manjeri town.
According to local tradition, Poongudil Mana is believed to date back to the period of King Vikramaditya. The Mana is also associated with Naranathu Bhranthan, a legendary character in Kerala folklore who is traditionally portrayed as pretending to be insane.
The treatment methods followed at Poongudil Mana are based on traditional knowledge that has been passed down through generations. It is traditionally believed that the fundamental principles underlying the treatment practices followed here have their roots in the Upanishads and the Vedas.
In modern times, the Mana is recognised as a place where Ayurvedic medicines are prepared in their traditional form. Treatment facilities are available for both outpatients and inpatients.
The treatment approach followed at the Mana is described as a holistic and multidisciplinary traditional system, incorporating the chanting of mantras, tantric rituals, traditional Ayurvedic medicines, and practical psychological approaches. These methods are traditionally combined with the aim of providing comprehensive care and achieving better therapeutic outcomes.
